#discord app
I don't want to hear SHIT about Discord's "adverts" (that don't feel like adverts) when:
- You can opt-out/disable them in User Settings > Privacy & Safety
- Discord has had loads of cross-promotions before: such as the old Nitro Games Store, the very old GameBridge thing, Nitro Promotions in Discord's Gift Inventory, Discord's own Nitro promotions for Nitro itself, Discord's Server Discovery, Discord's App Directory (for Bots), etc.
Also Discord has experimented with their Quests system last year in May 2023 with a Fortnite Quest.
But fine, if you want official resources to read up on Discord's current Quests system, here ya go:
- "Data used for In-Game Rewards" (Quests) Article
- "Discord Quests FAQ" Article
- "THE FINALS" Discord Quest Blog Post
- Fortnite Discord Quest Blog Post (from May 2023)
And for those who want a 3rd party article that actually has fucking research behind it and is not mainstream clickbait/misinformation/fear-mongering:
- Panley's Blog Post on Discord's distain of traditional advert systems
So Discord released "User Apps" (into public beta) last week.
If you don't know what User Apps are, they're basically Discord Bots that, if the Bot's developer allows/enables it, can be added to your account instead of (or in addition) to Servers - thus allowing you to use said Bot's Commands anywhere - in Servers, in Group DMs, and in regular DMs, even if the Bot itself isn't in that space.
Important thing to note is that Bots added as User Apps do NOT have the same level of information access as Bots added to Servers do. In other words: User App Bots can only receive when you've used their Command. Thus, they cannot read your DMs/GroupDMs/etc.
So, I decided to mess around with making a User App Bot.
Enjoy having a Starboard Bot for Users instead of Messages I guess? š

I guess if you want to use this Bot yourself to give people Stars (as a sort of global Starboard?), here's its invite link so you can add it as a User App. It's open sourced on my GitHub here too :)
Though ignore that "Allows this Bot to send you Direct Messages" thing on the "Add User App" modal Discord has - they show that for all User App invites even if you didn't include that scope into the invite link :S
I'm never gonna use or abuse that though; I know how annoying it is to get unsolicited DMs from Bots!
EDIT (24th May 2024): I have decided to not keep my Stars User App online anymore since it was just for me to experiment with Discord's new User Apps feature. Plus it was hardly getting any use anyways even from myself!
