CATALOGUE ARIA TIME BAYBEE. Love that bit of business at the end, naughty sauce little boy energy.
#don giovanni
What a ride that was.
On the whole, the production was fine. It's fine! The orchestra and singers are good, there's nothing awful in the production (some baffling stuff, we'll get there), it was a decent use of 3 hours of my life.
I would recommend this production (Opera North, 2012) to the following groups of people:
- Don Giovanni sickos who want to see another production
- People who already have a subscription to Digital Theatre
- People who want to feel like they're losing their minds about halfway through
I am a Don Giovanni appreciator, if not a sicko, and Natalie and I just got a subscription to Digital Theatre. So. Let's go.
Okay bless this production for understanding that Zerlina is a weird little freak1 and you can absolutely stage "Batti, batti, o bel Masetto" as her being into impact play. I also appreciate that in turn they make Masetto hurt and angry but (unlike some other productions I've seen) not actually violent here.
Here's a video of a very unhorny staging, but you can hear the aria and (if you turn on subtitles) see an English translation as well. https://youtu.be/jhWEIc7M68g
Like, the difference between:
- Nothing happened, but I'm sorry and I'm desperate for you to forgive me anyway, I'll let you beat me if it will make you feel better about it
- Nothing happened, but if it'll make you feel better you can beat me, I'll take it like a lamb. I'll kiss your hands and thank you. ...maybe pull my hair?
More productions need to take advantage of the latter.
