You cannot optimize throughput any further without running the risk of inducing pipeline hazards.

America's airport traffic is going through congestive heart failure!

In other words: we run the risk of a serious accident occurring due to controllers being told to maximize throughput at the cost of safety, and when - not if - a serious accident happens, it will be an FAAFO moment for sure, for all involved.
