A malformed essay idea that's been slowly rotting in the back of my head since 2016: FFXV, Dark Souls and Frazer's concept of the Sacrificial King. I guess you could throw FFXVI in there too now, but I don't think its story is interesting or well written enough to deserve the company it'd keep.
Someone way smarter than me write it, or don't. I haven't read The Golden Bough since I was a pretentious 20 year old and I'm too burned out to do it now.
