The couple were taking their time wandering back down the La Thagran Eastroad, enjoying the warm night air and the slow twinkling of fireflies. It had been a long, grueling search, but between Howellâs intuition and Siânâs tenacity theyâd finally managed to land the infamous Endoceras, and their Sharlayan clientâs commission for the fish would have them fed for the forseeable future.
As they approached the bridge to Limsa Lominsa proper, they heard a commotion from just outside the gates; a circle of guardsmen huddled around something, chatting concernedly. Siân stepped closer, craning her neck to see what all the fuss was about.
In the center of the circle was a woven basket carrying a Miqoâte infant, fast asleep despite all the attention. A handful of fireflies perched around the basketâs rim, flickering like tiny stars.
One of the guards noted the coupleâs curious stares and turned to them. âGoblin traders brought her by a bell ago. Said they found her washed ashore with the remains of a raft up near Iron Lake. No sign of her parents neither.â He glanced towards the gates into the city. âWeâre just waitinâ for one oâ the Admiralâs folks to come by anâ pick her up â get her checked out and find her somewhere to go an' all. Poor thingâs had a rough few days, I wager.â
Siân looked down at the tiny figure, then across at her husband, who was already returning her gaze.
âYouâve got that look,â said Howell, a warm smile spreading across his face.
âSheâs got spirit. I can tell. She deserves somewhere to thrive, not just to live. Besides,â Siân laughed, âI still want a daughter, and this way we donât have to leave it to chance again.â
Howell returned her laugh, along with a couple of the guards. The one whoâd spoken took a step towards them, worry written across his face. âNow, hold on, the sentimentâs all well and good, but are you sure this is⌠right for her? Beinâ as youâre not Miqoâte anâ all?â
âMust we be?â said Howell. âIs it not enough simply to love oneâs children, whoever they are? Besides, itâs not as if weâll be the only ones she can turn to.â
âAh, let âem have her, Skoenruht,â said another guard. âThe Feys are good folk, Iâll vouch for that.â She turned to the couple. âWhen the assessors come âround, weâll tell âem thereâs already interest.â
âOur thanks,â replied Howell. He regarded the child for a moment longer before looking back to his wife. âWeâll have to discuss this with the boys, of course. And the Endoceras money wonât stretch quite as far as weâd hopedâŚâ
âHaving doubts?â said Siân, already walking towards the city gates.
âNo, dear, just making sure you know what weâre getting into,â said Howell, moving to follow her. âAny ideas for a name?â
âHmmâŚâ Siân stopped for a moment to consider. âHow about Wynne?â
