I like designing fictional school uniforms. This is partly anime influence, partly because I lived in Japan, and partly lamenting how utterly LAME my public high school's uniform was when I was growing up in NYC (we had a uniform which is rare for an American public school).

When I was teaching English in Japan, a common essay prompt for writing class was "Do you think we should have uniforms in school?". Almost every student would reply with something like "I think we should have uniforms, because now is the only time in my life I can wear one". When I first saw this I was surprised because as an American, all you ever hear is how uniforms are snobby or needlessly complicated. But in Japan, it's viewed as a symbol of your time before being thrown into the workforce. Interestingly, there's even a shop in Harajuku called CONOMi where adults can buy uniform-like clothes for those wanting to wear them as a casual aesthetic.

Anyway I got to thinking about how one would design a uniform that's more inclusive for trans and gender non-conforming folks. One solution I saw several Japanese schools make is allow students to mix and match parts of the uniform as they pleased (ie blazers, pants, skirts) which is certainly a solution. On the other hand, I've seen attempts at gender neutral uniforms as well. If you're working on a story, you can of course just omit uniforms since it's fiction but I've grown too attached to how stylish they are.

Lots to consider.
