A Bairoph is a fictional hybrid species of my creation.
The name is derived from the three primary animals it is based on:
A ray [Batoidea]
A bat [Chiroptera]
A skunk [Mephitidae]
However, they also have some traits and features that are not based on those 3 animals.
Bairophs are bipedal digitigrade anthropomorphic creatures of [undetermined] size, have an inflatable prehensile tail with a thin tip, semi-inflatable wings, and gills on their chest in front of their wings. They have large bulging eyes and a long snoot. Their snoot contains an inflatable membranous bladder that can be used to store air, and they can control the muscles in their nostrils to change their shape to make various nasal sounds. Snoot boops may let out a small honk as a result. More musically oriented Bairophs may elect to get piercings in their snoot to create a series of holes for a "Snoot flute." Snoot flute timbres differ by individual in relation to their snoot size and shape. They have large feet with curved claws, used for catching, grasping, and hanging onto things.
They are capable of aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial movement, but they may choose to specialize in one or the other depending on the needs of the individual. Their inflatable wings and tails were, functionally speaking, originally designed to be specialized for aquatic movement, but can be used for other means depending on their needs and preferences of the individual (Inflatable tail being used as a chair, for example)
The Bairoph has a secondary respiratory system involving their gills. It consists of a series of interconnected bladders that they use for their inflation mechanism. They are able to consciously exchange gases from one respiratory system to the other, but usually only do so if necessary.
The definable characteristics of a Bairoph are:
-Long ears
-Long Snoot containing an inner inflatable membrane
-Long inflatable prehensile tails
-Membraneous wings that involve some degree of inflation, used for aerial and aquatic movement
-Gills
-Big paws with elongated toes and hooked claws
-Humanoid hands with non-hooked claws
-They have inflatable membranes on the undersides of the hands and feet. They are able to manually inflate all or part of the hand membrane to suit a variety of situations.
GreySleeves is the "Proto-Bairoph", as they are the original design the species is based off of. They are the progenitor for the species, but they are not a rigid example for all the proportions of a Bairoph. They are also the avatar of my personality and consciousness, and thus my ocdonutsteal.
The Bairoph is currently in development and is a closed species pending completion. Upon completion, they will be designated as an open species, and a blender file with a base Bairoph model will be available for free at [Placeholder].
