@mushroomhaus asked:

How do you approach new pottery projects? Do you do much pre-planning or is it mostly vibes-based?

+10 points for asking a special interest question! as a reward u get drawings/paintings in my sketchbook that have a lot more effort than these quick drawings! the answer is both, there’s often preplanning but there’s also lots of vibes in the moment decision making

recently i’ve been lucky enough to receive a few commissions and those have involved more pre-planning because it’s a collaboration between me and the people commissioning me which is just so exciting because it’s meant i’ve gotten to explore things i would have never done otherwise see horse mug

one piece that got a lot of positive response was one of the more vibes based than anything, i had the idea that i wanted to do an abstract black and white platter but had no drafts and was just free flowing during all the illustrative work! although not my first sgraffito piece it was definitely one that i think has a lot more voice and character infused into it

all four drawings here are drafts for commissions that are in various stages of progress! like i said these get more planning because i want to run them by the people asking for these mugs and get their feedback before i commit something to clay!
