i've had these thoughts and feelings bubbling up under the surface for the entire day now because the shit bandai pulled was one of the first things i saw when i woke up.
i had specific hopes and wants for this show that weren't fulfilled, particularly with regards to sulemio's relationship, but i think what was there was relatively solid for a first attempt, and more importantly, it was a significant first attempt.
i've been into gundam since i was a child, before i knew anything about my gender or sexuality, so witch from mercury coming around and doing what it did as i think about my own marriage with my own partner was very important to me. it was getting girl friends of mine who'd never even considered watching gundam before now to at least give it a shot. to get this in a long-running franchise like this was something i couldn't have even dreamed up before i watched that first episode.
it was simply important that it existed, regardless of whether or not they could do what they wanted or whether they got screwed over by fucked up corporate nonsense.
i think it's still important that it exists. i think the efforts of the staff, who have largely been supportive of the message from what i've seen, managed to get it out the way it did, regardless of any stifling from the greedy motherfuckers who are purely interested in taking our money and pushing us out now that it's over.
so yeah, i don't really fuck with the idea that this was "bound to happen", or that it was warranted because they fostered relationships between suletta and a few male characters, as if a yuri anime needs to seclude women in a bubble lest they risk contamination from the dangerous touch of a man. the fact of the matter is, the show did everything within the staff's power to present a relationship between two women and what we got was what was able to make it past the hurdles of being produced by a company that doesn't fucking give a shit, and i think that's at least admirable.
i still really like gwitch. fuck bandai, though.
