I've been watching G-Witch with subtitles because I think anime is better that way, but I first heard the dub because I wanted to see that scene with the "Suretta... Wasureta" pun in episode 10 and how the dub handled "Suletta... forgetta" which by the way, is an amazing translation. I don't know much of anything about japanese but I know humor often doesn't translate cleanly at all to english because the joke is in the sound and or meaning of words (feels obvious writing it out huh), but the fact that they managed to translate humor from one language to another without losing anything is pretty cool to me.
So the line is "スレッタ忘れた". Wasureta as far as I can gather means "I forgot", and it's funny because they sound very similar and the way Suletta says the line in a very casual way not realizing she's making a joke, I think that helps it land a lot better. The scene below:
Then I heard the dub, first thing that struck me was how weirdly Suletta pronounces "Miss Miorine", like miss MiOhrine. I didn't like that one bit but whatever, then comes the joke, it feels to me like it's overplayed and just tonally different. Like Suletta turns into a pokemon for a second to say it, it's not said casually like in japanese which to me makes the joke feel weaker (even though I speak english and not japanese). The clip from the dub:
It's a small thing but changes like these are why I prefer listening to the original audio, I know people who watched the dub still found it funny and I'm glad there's people out there who like the dub (don't think I'm shitting on it, it's just not for me), but like.. the vibe is so different, I don't know how to word this in a smart way. Reading the subtitles means there's no tone shift problem, since you're hearing the audio of the actor speaking and just interpreting words. I remembered "Suletta Forgetta" and wanted to rewatch the scene because it's a sweet little moment, but I feel like a lot of people who only watched the dub remembered it differently (and probably never got to understand the original joke with the sound of the japanese words)
Got distracted for a few weeks, but heres the first half of a Gunpla double whammy to make up for it. First off its the Beguir-Pente!
Got very concerned when I saw this thing had a borderline-IBO number of stickers (thankfully just for the glowing parts), but they were surprisingly easy (if tedious for the ones on it's backpack thrusters) to put on. Also this might just be my favorite form of a mobile suit shield to boot, its a weird grip design like the Beguir-Beu's blades but its still really posable despite that. Kinda wish this thing had open-palm hands so I could do a Shield Plant/Shield Maiden pose with this thing, that shield is wumbo big.
Don't have the Hiendee (or Heindee Sturm) so I can't continue the Grassley Systems gunpla, but I'll double back around to those eventually. These are just too fun to build.
