had this issue for a long time and finally fixed it thanks to the discord. but i don't want anyone else to have to stumble around since there's no article out there telling you how to fix it. so i'm making this post here and on my website and letting (and helping) SEO take the wheel.
i think whenever we find a fix for our problems in an obscure forum or discord we should post about it and make it more accessible from now on. helps decentralize information.

So! A visual novel I've been working on with friends for a long time, Twofold, came out a couple of days ago! What started as a tiny jokey project by a handful of people from a small community of artists grew, changed and developed in ways I would never think of at the beginning of 2012. 11 years is really a long time! It's almost the whole entirety of my adult life up to this point, the project starting when I was technically still in high school. Over those 11 years I grew up into a very different person, fell in love, ended up working on this VN together with that love, lived in four different places, tried on and threw away a few genders, met amazing friends, the list goes on, and Twofold was always there in the background.

And like I mentioned above, my lovely wonderful significant other, ✨tentakl✨, (who I also met in that community of artists!) was always very interested and invested in this project from the very beginning, and both the game and the community around it meant a lot to them, always doing their best to help as much as they could, even before being an artist at all. As the game was being developed they've actually learned how to create art and ended up officially joining the project and helping out a lot and creating wonderful artwork as well!!

A background for Twofold by tentakl, my SO <3

Speaking of backgrounds, Twofold also represents the entirety of me learning to draw places and environments and such: there was a need for backgrounds, so I wanted to learn backgrounds. Over all those years I've learned a lot, and a lot of that was directly because of this VN!

One of the first backgrounds I've created for the project, and one of the more recent backgrounds that are in the final game.

On top of this, just going through this entire saga gave me a lot of insight into how the development of an indie video game goes - starting from almost nothing, going through all the growing pains, through all the challenging events, really seeing how projects roll and function and develop.

Finally and most importantly, I've met some absolutely incredible people, some of my best friends that I would die for, thanks to the game. People I directly worked with, and people I met indirectly through everything and everyone surrounding the project. Being part of the VN will always feel like it was worth it just because of this.

The road definitely wasn't without bumps - almost every project has a bit of strife in it, and this was no exception, especially given the length and turbulence of the development. Inevitably it hit some snags, didn't always go how we intended and hoped for, and left some scars, sadness and regret. A lot of things feel like could've been different, but at the same time they only could've gone the way they did. The game releasing and reminiscing on the decade of being around it made me remember many fond memories, but also made me remember and think of things that made me cry a lot, then and now. But altogether, it was a very important part of my life for a long time, and was part of me growing and learning a lot.

So, thank you for all the people who've been there and put in a lot of effort into creating something together.
