finally have the time to answer this, and i will answer it in two parts.
First- this is exactly the kind of question that you should not be asking people. Do your own research- people frequently use the cohost meta tag for this, or discourse tag or whatever. understand that your curiosity comes off as invasive to those who are going through the re-traumatization of dealing with continued racism, and the consequences of posting about it. follow POC on here and usually you'll catch at least some secondhand knowledge about what's going on.
That being said, because I'm white, I have the privilege of being able to observe rather than experience racism as it happens on this site. these are things i've read about from non-white users and general trends that i've seen- it is by no means complete, and i do not promise accuracy. Please look towards non-white users and READ what they have to say to get the full picture. @alyaza has made a handful of very good recent posts about the issues POC on this site face, and also frequently shares others.
people in general on this site try to have the outward veneer of being pleasant and sociable, which frequently degrades to very insidious forms of racism, which is cloaked in curiosity and 'intellectualism'
the most recent (big) example was as follows (names omitted for privacy):
- east asian user speaks out about orientalism in games, in what is honestly a very fair and even-handed post
- many (presumed white) users respond negatively, seeing that criticism as an attack on themselves and start defending things like cultural appropriation, imperialism, and infantilization of some east asian cultures. rather than listening and internalizing the criticism, they have chosen to lash out because they feel they've been slighted
- this results in quite a lot of anonymous messages directed at said east asian user asking them to explain their position in detail, why it should matter, if it "qualifies" as orientalism in random scenarios. this is harassment. if someone is speaking about their own experiences, using their own opinions that have been driven by real world consequences, further pestering them on the subject, trying to get them to concede anything, is harassment. it doesn't matter if it's done out of "genuine" curiosity.
- when the original user speaks about this, many people reply saying simply 'turn off anon asks' which sparks a conversation from other non-white users of the site about how this is something they also have experienced. essentially having anons enabled puts them at greater risk of harassment than it does a white user.
- this then leads to discussion of the policy- if something is not calling someone slurs but very much does violate the spirit of the community guidelines, why does there seem to be no consequences for those who participate in this kind of harassment? a user even shared screenshots of a heinous "conversation" where someone was not banned for repeatedly infantilizing east asian folks on top of other obviously offensive shit, while the people calling them clowns were given a warning.
this should not elicit a response questioning any of this, why it started in the first place, why it's continuing, whether it is warranted or not- this should be concerning because marginalized users feel unsafe using this site. it does not matter the specifics when this is a pattern remarked upon by a HUGE swathe of users that negatively impacts them. if something has you confused or conflicted it is your duty to examine those emotions and sit with them especially if you are coming from a place of relative privilege. know that that privilege allows you to detach yourself from the personal impacts of whatever is going on, and whatever curiosity comes from that is a direct result of that privilege.
a lot of what marginalized users are asking is just to listen and think. your curiosity does not supercede someone's pain, and your hypotheticals, your questions don't need to be answered. you can move on. you can do other research. you can look at opinions that have you conflicted and know you have to THINK about it. you don't immediately have to respond to information that contradicts what you know or believe- hell, even if you disagree, think about why you disagree, and then think about what experiences someone might have had to make them think that way.
anyway, i don't know how coherent this is. suggestions/corrections/addendums from non-white cohost users readily and willingly accepted. if you're white and you're thinking about sending me (or anyone) angry messages about this- please examine why you're angry before doing so.
