tonight's movie was The Fog (1980)! and i fucking loved it so much! The Fog is an unbelievable masterclass in 80's horror pacing, with a laser focus and incredibly effective tension building that genuinely gripped me for the entire run time and didn't let go. the opening is just so goddamn good, with barely any dialogue and just all of man's creations freaking the fuck out in a way that it feels like the world has ended before the movie has even begun! it's incredible to think that The Fog was only John Carpenter's third massive studio movie and he showed no signs of slowing down, despite the mixed critical reception at the time not just from critics but from Carpenter himself who talked openly about how a lot of the movie is reshoots and he feels like it compromised the film. but honestly, it's really hard to tell what is reshot footage or not because everything is so seamless. the movie also oozes that signature Carpenter style, with pitch black nights lit by pinlights in a haze of blue smoke, but also the movie looks just as fantastic even in the daylight of the Northern Californian coast. and it goes without saying that the music by Carpenter is incredible, with an unsettling drone making up most of the audio signature, along with extremely clever use of sound effects in the movie enhancing the unsettling score. Adrienne Barbaeau is the core of the movie as the tired radio DJ Stevie Wayne who operates out of a lighthouse on the coast of Antonio Bay and she does a fantastic job as that classical horror archetype of the DJ trying to warn everyone of the danger. though despite being the protagonist of the movie, she dosen't really get to do a whole lot outside of talking into a microphone. Jamie Lee Curtis fills up the other main role as the hitchhiker Elizabeth Solley who gets a ride from Nick Castle (Tom Atkins) into Antonio Bay at the worst possible time and gets caught up in the whole affair. the setup for this is that Antonio Bay is celebrating it's 100 year anniversary since it's founding, and on the night of April 21st, a bizarre structural failing in the local church reveals a book to Father Patrick Malone (Hal Holbrook). while this happens, other strange events start occurring across the entire town, such as gas pumps starting, or car lifts raising their cargo by themselves. during an everyday drive, Nick picks up Elizabeth off the road and as they begin to hit it off, all the glass in the truck explodes, thankfully causing no damage to the two. Stevie's radio show seems to be encountering no issues and is broadcasting just fine, until she gets a call from the local 'weather man' Dan O'Bannon (Charles Cyphers) who between flirting with the exhausted DJ informs her of a fog patch forming at sea and asks her to alert a trawler, The Sea Grass, that's currently some distance off the shore. Nicky does so, to which the boat captain discards as none of them see no fog....until they are enveloped in it as the boat completely shuts down and the dials begin to explode. two of the boat's crew go up on deck and see a dilapidated wooden ship beside them, much to their confusion. before they can investigate the vessel, figures in the fog kill them. the remaining crew member waits in the cabin and is killed before he realizes his friends are dead. soon, the fog recedes. the next morning, the trawler is reported missing and Nick along with Elizabeth go out to join the search. eventually The Sea Grass is found, but there's no bodies and the state of the boat looks like it was dragged from the depths. paranormal revenge hijinks ensue. i highly, highly recommend The Fog as it's just a stellar horror movie in every way that matters!
