Gripes I’ve been getting really cranky about lately:

I mean, this is sort of just the same problem expressing itself in different sinister ways but it’s just absolutely batshit to me that so many fucking companies expect me to install their bullshit software on my phone

First up, we have intentional stifling of mobile website functionality to make you go “hey I guess I have to use the app”

Reddit is an extreme offender of this, I hope they get what’s coming to them, I do not want to install Reddit on my phone, but it is completely stripped down in browser, for 0 reasons other than they want you to install their software on your phone, I’m not entirely sure of every reason behind this but I’m guessing it’s so you cannot block ads, I basically do not use Reddit on my phone anymore as much as I used to when I want so bothered by ads, cohost made me realize how absolutely annoying ads are so I started blocking them through extreme means wherever possible

Instagram was the worst offender of this I’ve encountered but the insane thing about Instagram was they were an app first social network, the website was practically non functional as Instagram for a very long time, now you can even upload things, you couldn’t upload things on Instagram.com in a normal web browser for a very long time, hideous, I don’t want to use the Instagram app either but they’ve made it so you cannot share posts to stories via the website, because they want you to use the app, despite adding more functionality to their actual website, again, hideous, I want the least amount of software on my phone as possible, and the least amount of ads, I’ve basically not been using Instagram anymore because of the ads and stifling of features on the actual website, I hope they get what’s coming to them

Twitter search is fucking broken on the mobile site, but it’s functional otherwise, I do not use the Twitter app, I refuse to use the Twitter app any longer, Twitter ads are out of control, I hope they get what’s coming to them

But anyway, obviously it’s not just social media, what prompted this is that I went to visit Google maps, and it kept trying to open the fucking App Store to install the app, I don’t want to install the fucking app! You have a website you fools! A website! I don’t want your bullshit software taking up space on my fucking phone especially when you have a website already! I hope they get what’s coming to them

AND IT’S NOT JUST GOOGLE

IHOP, McDonald’s, Starbucks, every fucking major food chain has a fucking app, if you tried to tell someone to install software on your computer in 1980 to order a pizza they would kill you with a hammer, I would at least, I don’t know, I was born in 1996, it’s not even fucking convenient, I would rather use a website! You can say yes but it’s Optional but oh boy if there aren’t a million fucking pop ups promising to suck me off if I install their bullshit software every page reload or action taken to order a fucking pizza, it’s asinine, and it’s like oh you can use the phone to order ahead of time or delivery, but guess what, there’s a fucking 3+ minute long spiel about how you should download the fucking app™ followed by a maze of prompts to get you so frustrated that you just go ahead and install the fucking app, I hope they all get what’s coming to them

But seriously it is so frustrating the endless fucking pop ups on some mobile sites just begging and pleading and offering me their daughters hand in marriage to install their hideous software

Anyway I hate that every institution in the world now feels I owe it to them to install software on my phone, it’s sickening, I hope all these corps and sites and hot dog stands get what’s coming to them
