I'm personally very excited by mixed reality. The mobile revolution started by the iPhone has been fantastic for the democratization of tech, millions of people who rarely used a desktop or even laptop computer are happily tapping away on incredibly powerful devices that can go with you anywhere. But the platforms built for these devices have been simplified to an extreme level, at least in part due to sheer necessity. iPhones don't use indirect pointing devices like mice or trackpads, so there's a limited amount of precision available. They have limited screen sizes, so you can only multitask to a limited extent. But perhaps worst of all, they're hindered by the App Store, which notoriously gatekeeps the platform, banning broad software categories like emulators and development tools entirely.
In my view, mixed reality is a fresh opportunity. We're going to have unlimited display real estate, we can easily have very precise input, mixed reality can clearly be the next workhorse platform, like the Mac. If it also catches on like the iPhone, it could open up a whole new world of capability, democratizing not just digital consumption, but creation, to everybody.
I'm starting to believe I've set myself up for disappointment.
