Here's a little woodturning erotica for all you perverts out there.

here's one inefficiency that i practice (and that i'll defend): cleaning up the surface to check on it knowing that the next step is to immediately undo that tedious work when i alter the shape again with rougher tools. while making this piece i think i did it four or five times. my reasoning is in previous posts about this piece, which you can read by searching the tag "#bigredcedarbowl2". suffice it to say that, for me, it's necessary when investing a lot of work into twisty, weirdo material like the stock this bowl comes from. which is the only kind i'm at all interested in using these days.

so, what's happening in the photos is the last shape alteration and the last resurfacing pass that occurred on this piece before sealing it. i'm sanding it up to 120 grit before sealing just so i can be sure there isn't any more work to be done. problems can sometimes hide in scratches made by lower grit paper.

UNRELATEDLY, but it's ON MY MIND:

i was making coffee this morning and in that haze between wakefulness and sleep i was hearing the song Fall of the Star High School Running Back, by The Mountain Goats because i recently spoke to a roofer who was telling me about his daughter's husband, who played "college ball" but had a knee injury so now he does something else that's not football, i forget.

in the song he says "blew your knee out in an out of town game/nowhere to go but down down down/nothing but the ground left for you to fall to" and for the longest time i didn't connect that the last line is a play on the idea of falling to one's knees. he'd be prevented from doing that (a symbol of submission) because his knees were fucked up, as was communicated just before (and it sets us up for his unwillingness to be defeated/stop being a "star" driving his downfall later in the song). i've known and loved that song for 15 years, probably listened to it over a hundred times. never understood the first verse past the surface until this morning.

anyway, "having an epiphany" is another way of saying that i found out how dumb i'd been all along. that happens to me pretty frequently.
