Like in my movies chost, I'm going to log the games I play this year.
Signalis, rose-engine, 2022, played in January
A retro-looking survival horror about sad space robots, lesbians, and cosmic horror. Impeccable aesthetics and designs, with a (really gay) story that I'll be thinking about for a while.
I hear this game is very obvious with its references and inspirations, but I'm not a horror connoisseur (I've been warming up to horror recently and slowly), so most of those probably flew over my head. So, strangely, the thing that I was strongly reminded of while playing (watching my girlfriend play, actually), is Another Code (Trace Memory in the US), an early DS game with similar "puzzles give you keys to unlock rooms which contain more puzzles" mechanics. It's far from the only game that does this, and Another Code didn't have combat, but somehow the aesthetics of the puzzles, coupled with the low-poly 3D, really brought back my memories of this game I haven't played in 15 years.
Yeah anyway Signalis was really really great. It's a short game (7-10 hours), and it's more spooky than scary, so I recommend you give it a try.
