College students probably rival senior citizens in both their tech illiteracy and complete inability to follow basic troubleshooting steps. People who think the youths are good at computers don’t actually deal with the youths. They know their way through phones, apps and social media but you hand them a machine that can do things and they fuck it up in colossal fashion.
This isn't really an indictment on the youths as much as it is about the anemic education about computers we have in the average public school in the USA. I actually really believe it has somehow gotten worse over the years. I'm what the youths would call an oldie even though I'm not quite 40 yet, so when I was in school we used an abacus... okay just kidding, but we had DOS based machines mostly. That asked a lot more from us and probably made us more likely to put in the time to learn the systems.
My proposal is probably controversial though. Many people blame the fact iPads and Chromebooks are too easy to use as to why the youths don't even know how to work a file a system, but to me this is probably a good thing. Abstract the hell out of computers. Make them even easier to use. Remove file systems altogether. The new paradigm shifts are going to be wild.
