Finally gave into my base urges and (pre)ordered yet another handheld today. The Playdate this time. This will be the third time in the past year I've thought incessantly about some game console and then purchased it at an irresponsible price, the last two being a 3DS and a Steam Deck. Considering I have no real regrets about buying either of those two I'm hoping I'll be able to say the same about the Playdate whenever mine eventually ships out.
Interestingly I'm not buying this one for the games so much as because having one will allow me to confidently make games. The Playdate seems like a great time to develop for between the creative limitations and the novel combination of input methods, and I have a handful of ideas I think I could do justice. Not to mention it's built for my all-time favorite programming language.
With tens of thousands of people willing to pay close to the price of some actual legitimate consoles and looking for games to justify that purchase, I don't know if I can break even by selling something but I think there's at least a solid chance of reducing my net loss.
