tonight's movie was Swamp Thing (1982)! and i really liked it! at first i was like, Wes Craven did a superhero movie? and not that long after Last House on the Left? and yes, he did! and it's not really a superhero movie in the modern sense, more of a homage to 50's creature features (rubber suit and all) mixed with action and a little bit of romance. from the word go, this movie has a very distinct look that i think is very much in the spirit of Last House, but without that feeling of "oh, it's free to film in the woods" because there's also a lot of props and sets built into the wetlands of South Carolina. the horror aspect never leaves the movie aesthetically, and it's to Swamp Thing's benefit. in fact, it leans into it and makes for some often very striking imagery, like the scenes of the laboratory at night or the shot of Arcane on his balcony. the performances across the board strike this perfect balance of hamminess and also....poetical? like, every character makes reference to some sort of philosopher or poet, it's wild. Louis Jordan's Anton Arcane is especially good at swirling goblets of wine and pontificating on man's sins like he's a mix of a Bond villain (which he was) and fuckin' Dracula in Symphony of the Night, it's extremely good and works. and honestly, i love the rubber suit of the Swamp Thing and how it looks simultaneously really good and really bad, but with intentionality. i was kind of hoping Ray Wise would voice the Swamp Thing the entire movie but after he gets got, he kinda gets removed from the movie and replaced with Dick Durock, who does a really good job of struggling with his being. Adrienne Barbeau's character Alice Cable starts off really fucking cool and she kicks some ass but as the movie goes on, it's unfortunate how much her character just becomes "I'm going to yell for the Swamp Thing" over and over, though Barbeau does put a ton of work into trying to disguise this fact. i also love that the formula that the Hollands produce is just the green liquid from Re-Animator (though yes, Swamp Thing did come first). now how about that fuckin' shared universe? now, i should point out i have less then zero experience with Swamp Thing in comics and i have no idea if this is a good portrayal of that story, but the setup here is that Alice Cable arrives to replace a scientist who tragically passed away from an alligator attack we are quickly introduced to the team before Alice realizes that there is a sensor malfunctioning. the group's chief security officer Harry Ritter (Don Knight) informs her that her predecessor was trying to fix it when he was attacked. After meeting doctors Alec Holland (Ray Wise) and his sister Linda Holland (Nannette Brown), Alec offers to take Alice out on a tour of the swamps and bayous they are working in while also investigating the sensor malfunction. in the meantime, a group of camouflaged soldiers have captured and killed a member of the team, unbeknownst to the group. horror, action and romantic hijinks ensue. i really liked this movie and if are more then happy to go back to a time of rubber suits, i think you would too!
