My friend who works in crisis response was lamenting twitter's death because twitter is literally used as a primary source that is far quicker and more reliable than infrastructural sources.

People like her and @MxSelfDestruct (whose post led me to think more on this) are rightly looking for a replacement.

Albeit as someone not super versed in emergercy response, here are platform features that I think are required for the same kind of community reporting twitter uses:

  • widespread usability in a public, globally centralized source (or at least source where localities can shift in size and spread - local-to-nyc vs local-to-queens vs local-to-lower-west-side vs local-to-area-around-george-washingon-bridge not being mutually exclusive/requiring multiple instances...on a global scale)

❌ mastodon ❌ discord ❌ facebook ❌ snapchat

  • lightning-fast reporting and updating on said reports that is accessible via that shifting location-based area

many platforms can theoretically post quickly, but not all encourage this like twitter. ❌ however instagram has no sharing feature like the others.

  • instantaneous sharing of said reports along with their updates - i.e, resharing one person's report thread carries the rest of their reports along automatically

❌ tumblr ❌ cohost

  • an algorithm that detects which tags/reports are "trending" globally and in your area and aggregates them in a tab you can freely browse and contribute to with the correct tag

????

If people can think of anything else such a platform would need, or any platform that fits these requirements, feel free to comment. All my friend could think of was NextDoor 😬

Theoretically a crisis response platform with all these features could be coded without needing to also be a Social Media site, but getting people to use it is another thing.

Hi! I'm Lex!

Lex Feathers

Musician and Sound Designer 🌸 she/they

I'm a musician and creative from Toronto. I love making things with my hands, including scalemaille, furniture, and light fixtures. I'm enthusiastic about web design and code, though the latter is more an interest than something I am proficient in. 😅

TL;DR: trans lesbian who puts casters on everything.

Here is a little directory of Things I Do that you can
experience:

Waxlimbs

The Waxlimbs mask design

This is the band / music-project I've been in for around 11 years now. It sounds like electronica with rock sprinkled in there, and more recently we've been kind of touching a slight metal angle.

We've released loads of music, and heavily incorporate the visual side of things into the project via live shows, 3D printing, and unified cover art concepts.

Check us out on Bandcamp, or our website :)

Game Audio

Lex's Game Audio Portfolio logo

Since 2016, I've been working on music and sound design for indie games, mostly in Toronto's gamedev community.

Interactive audio has a special place in my heart, and scoring emotional games is one of those things I feel extremely lucky to be able to do.

You can find my work at Gameaudio.ca!

Solo music

The cover for 2023's 'I Need To Know Your Form' single

Currently, I'm releasing aggressive electronic music under the name Void Femmes. This project is an outlet for me to make and release music as fast as possible, and to find joy in the process alone. It's very easy to wind up getting slowed by the pressure of some projects, sometimes!

The cover for 2019's 'Cracked Earth' single

I've also released a body of solo electronic music under a project that I've put to rest for the time being. I'm very proud of it, and believe that it represents what I was good at 3 years ago.

This project was ultimately about having fun in a creative space without any pressure; something I had been missing for years. I think I wrote some pretty fun music during this time period!

Nowadays I am mostly focused on Waxlimbs, but have ambitions to get back to releasing my own music eventually.

You can listen to my music on Bandcamp :)

ps: Here's the template I wrote for this post's formatting, so you can use it too! 😺
