psa: make sure your monitor is level

so, i was talking about ergonomics with a friend the other day and it reminded me of my personal experiences (read: trauma) with monitor angle/rotation and how it can absolutely ruin your day(s? months? years?) without even realizing something's wrong.

my previous monitor was a generic Dell 16:10 office flatscreen thing, one that rotates but not freely, it can be locked in a horizontal or vertical orientation and that's it. i'd been using it for close to a decade before i got a new one last year - and oh boy have i made a discovery that day.

turns out, over the decade of use, the mechanism that locks the display in the horizontal position must've gotten misaligned or something (or perhaps it was always like that, idk) because the monitor was tilted almost 1 degree to the left.

i'd never noticed it before, and in fact the only reason i checked was because i thought the new one was defective in some weird way! but no, it was the old one that was off. it just looked "right" because i've gotten used to it.

i used to get all sorts of neck/shoulder/back pain when using my PC and i always assumed it was just because i spent waaay too much time in front of it. nope, it was all the goddamn piece of shit monitor. all of that went away when i switched to the new one. and never in a million years i would've thought to check if the old one was level because it never felt weird or off in any way.

on top of that it really messes with your head. it took like 3 months of gradual adjustments of the angle on the new monitor to get to the perfectly level position. my brain tried to "adjust" for the tilt that was no longer there and it looked to me like it was slightly rotated when it wasn't. and i couldn't just fix it outright because it would piss me off too much.

  • 1 degree of rotation (or even less than that) can absolutely Fuck You Up!!
  • my brain is lying to me even more than i thought and i Hate It
  • why do i have to worry about any of this! why isn't there some sort of indistinguishable-from-magic solution that takes care of it on its own!
  • i will forever experience Display Trust Issues
