I will say that being cute and twee about everyone's favourite military-industrial blacksite was not Half-Life: Alyx's most tone-deaf writing decision - they gave their main character (someone else's biracial character) a "racist discovers they're racialised themself" arc and then stripped out the "discovers they're racialised themself" part so as to leave in only the "racist" part how does no one talk about this

#disclaimer: attempting to ascribe authorial intent to Half-Life: Alyx, let alone apply a critique of authorial intent to Half-Life: Alyx, is a fruitless endeavour #the way this particular writing decision came about must have gone something like, "hey, so the part of the script about Alyx being racist against the DMT elves, and then discovering she's part DMT elf? isn't that just... tasteless? can't we cut it? well I mean the scenes establishing her racism are tangled up in too many different things for us to be able to make a clean cut within our remaining man-hours, but we can at least cut the scene revealing she's part DMT elf and that might mitigate the damage."#god they did their DMT elves dirty #please do not use DMT elves as a race metaphor, if at all possible within your working conditions #sometimes I think Half-Life: Alyx must be a joke - and then I remember, no, it's just a AAA videogame #Half-Life
