fun fact about smith-ninth streets: it's the tallest metro station in the world (in terms of height above street level.) this is because it's on the culver viaduct, a big-ass bridge over the gowanus canal. back when they were building it, like, a hundred years ago, they ran the numbers and apparently building a giant-ass mile long viaduct was cheaper than a tunnel. more reading here!
