With INDIE INTERVIEWS, I talk to the game developers hanging here on Cohost to learn more about new games you might love.
There's something about old 8-bit and 16-bit styles that have a timeless appeal. The art and characters speak to me emotionally, especially how you can project your own imagination and interpretation onto those tiny pixels! I certainly wouldn't want a world where every single game had lush, hand-drawn assets. On that note, it's been cool to see how different devs have approached retro game art and retro game mechanics. I talked with @narwhalnut to get into it.
You can find Belle Boomerang on Steam and Nintendo Switch. You can find all of Narwhalnut's games on itch.io.
Introduce yourself for everyone here on Cohost! Who are you?
HI! I’m Narwhalnut and I’m an indie game developer. I love cute creatures and retro games!
Is there a project you're working on currently? Tell us about it!
It has not been formally announced yet but I am beginning work on a demo for a brand new project! It’s an RPG with light platforming elements, a strong sense of exploration, and a unique battle system. The working title is “Insectile”.
How did you find yourself first getting into game development?
As silly as it is, I think games like Minecraft and WarioWare D.I.Y. really sparked my interest in game development. Despite their limitations, they really encouraged creativity. I also played with nearly every level builder I could find. I loved any way of getting my ideas onto the screen and there were luckily a lot of ways to do that at the time.
