#japanese mahjong

I recently added A Bunch Of Stuff to my riichi mahjong collection! \o/

Figure 1 shows the cases for the three sets. From top to bottom, they're a Silver Dragon (a smol travel set), a Sora (a 30mm set endorsed by one of the Japanese pro mahjong organizations, Nihon Pro Mahjong), and an AMOS Masters (the gold-standard riichi set, which also comes with a Compass centerpiece — my second — and a Hayahaya scoring aid — which is useless to me until I get it translated lol).

Figure 2 shows a size comparison of the tiles, with a U.S. quarter for scale.

Figure 3 shows off the backs of the Silver Dragon tiles and their adorably tiny little smol tenbō. 🥺

Post 2 on the Mahjong Express is here, and this one, I can tell you right now, I purchased for two major reasons:
• The person selling it mislabeled it as a Chinese set when it's a Japanese Riichi Mahjong set
• The hand-drawn notes from the previous owner that has an incredibly goofy horse that I love.

I wanted to get a set that would be suitable for reach mahjong play, so this one seemed like a complete no-brainer to me. It's entirely made out of plastic or resin and is a pretty typical style of tile -- kind of smallish, but definitely a lot thicker around than your average American style tile, so they can stand up without too much issue.

The previous owners didn't seem to like playing with the 'red 5' rules, as those tiles were still wrapped up in cellophane when I got it. To each their own -- I'm a big fan of Bonus Tiles all around, because I like more random chance and nonsense in my games if I can help it.

I feel very good about this set in particular, because out of all of them, this one definitely feels like it saw some real use, and my guess it saw use on a vacation or something. I like that little connection of things between different owners, and it makes it more than just a regular object to me.
