It's funny, I don't actually like cars by themselves much and the car crash scenes don't really do anything for me, but I admire how Cronenberg managed to translate the clinical cold fascination James Ballard expressed so well in his book. It is the quintessential movie about nothing at all, while simultaneously being about the very idea of what it means to be alive.
But yes the scar kissing is a body horror (though I don't agree with the term in this case) staple and a highlight for sure. One of my favourite character introductions is probably that of Vaughn's, when he looks over James at the hospital. Says a lot about the one of the movie going forward.
