This is the chorus of Halsey’s 2015 trust fund kid anthem “New Americana” remixed by a DJ in the US, then remixed by a DJ in Italy, then remixed by a DJ in Russia, then remixed by a DJ in China, then mashed up by another DJ in China with a track from a local pop artist who specializes in period soap opera theme music in classical Chinese, for use in vaporwave TikTok memes about American stage magicians.

The original works are awful and most of the remixes are dialed-in and lazy, and yet it all comes together into something inexplicably powerful and evocative. Together, the lyrics evoke a lovelorn Tang Dynasty princess trembling with dread and anticipation about the arrival of her lover, a deeply unhappy southern California corporate heiress.
