genuinely though i think the term is broad enough that it's kind of unhelpful. i've been thinking about trying to come up with or find more granular terminology. at least with stuff i watch, there's a few broad categories:

  • Internet Lore: video covering a strange internet story, or an infamous online denizen. you have to be a bit careful with some of these because they can slip into kiwi farms or true crime territory, but some of them are fine. Example: Strange Æons
  • Media Review: video reviewing one specific work of media in detail, whether that's a book, movie, video game, etc. Example: Mandalore Gaming
  • Media Retrospective: video retrospective of a series or franchise. as opposed to reviews these tend to be longer; part critique and part summary; and may go in depth on the work's development/creation. Example: modern Quinton Reviews
  • Nostalgia Documentary: documentary content on the history and development of a work of media, product, or brand. Example: Defunctland
  • Fictional Lore: in-depth lore, story analysis, or fan theories about a fictional world. Example: VaatiVidya
  • Analytical Essay: thesis-driven essay which references multiple works of media in support of a singular argument: Example: Jacob Geller

and i'm sure there's a ton of categories i'm missing. lmk if you think of any.
