I've mostly talked bout the most intelligent species, but the term 'grove' refers to a whole clade of organisms. This is a species species of grove that is closest to the ancestral form of the groves

It's a small, water loving plant that grows on coasts and near rivers. It uses the water to disperse its seeds. Among groves, size is closely related to intelligence, both in terms of the height of tree and the average colony size. Though it's not always a direct relationship. This species has basically no cognitive ability as it has no need for it.

It's seeds/spores (the part that would become drones in more derived species) is capable of very basic locomotion and perception. This is used to find an ideal spot to grow and to get in and out of the water when necessary.

This species does use pheromones to communicate, but they are primarily communicating with the seeds of other individuals.
