so probably among the nerdiest things i did as a kid was try to make ice an additive art medium (rather than subtractive, a la carving etc); I'd fill just a little bit of water and add food coloring, then freeze, then add a bit more, food coloring, freeze, etc.

It actually kinda worked but then i tried to bring them in to Mrs Kolarik's 3rd grade show-and-tell day and ended up being all sad when i had to try to explain why i was presenting brown water.
