Summary:

It’s true. Chiba doesn’t want to think too much about that point in his life. Let’s just say everything that could have gone wrong in the life of a seventeen-year-old country boy in the city went wrong all at once. And the boss... well, the boss did exactly what Nishitani said.

[In which we learn a little about Chiba's past and see just how he ended up with the Kijin Clan. Advisory: while Sagawa does not do anything graphic on screen, he is definitely not hiding his sex pesty tendencies here.]

Hoo. I don't know how or if this flashback is going to make it into the main story but I needed this shit out of my brain. So. Two things before you click that readmore:

1. This is a fuck-off huge spoiler for a major character's backstory and motivations and
2. it depicts part of a really awful Y0 cutscene from that character's perspective, including The Worst Person In Sotenbori being... exactly that, so be advised. (he is not awful to this character in any graphic way in this scene but there are some Things Implied, just fyi)

[An evening at the Grand ft. Aoyagi, Chiba, and Shiori]

If he's being honest, Aoyagi preferred the atmosphere at Sunshine. It was smaller, and quieter, and cheaper. Still, he feels better knowing his money isn't going into that Kanzaki shitheel's pockets anymore.

"I mean," Shiori says, "we knew he was a turd after the whole feet pic bandit thing. You told us he was a turd."

"I did say that," Aoyagi says, wiping his chilly hands with a nice warm towel. "In so many words, even. So you're likin' it here a lot better?"

"Oh hell yes." She stops there, with that look on her face like there's more she wants to say, and then she sighs. "I feel so bad for Yuki-san, though. Of course she wanted to try and fix everything but... God, I'm being a downer. On the clock, even! Sorry, guys."

"Aw, don't sweat it." Chiba knocks back about half of whatever he's drinking and his gal (whose name Aoyagi can't recall at the moment and he's too embarrassed to ask) pours him another. "You can always come vent at us off the clock. Oh, speakin' of--" He waggles an eyebrow in Aoyagi's general direction. "Shiori-chan was just tellin' us all about the hot date she went on last week. That didn't work out. Maybe now's yer chance to--"

"Oh, leave him alone!" Shiori swats at him with a menu, but she's laughing and not in an on the clock way, so it's all good. "What can we get you to drink tonight, Amano-san?"

"Jack and Coke, hold the Jack," Aoyagi says. "And whatever you want." Chiba's eyes light up and Aoyagi cuts him off before he can even start. "Nobody's talkin' to you, I meant Shiori-chan." Chiba and his gal both laugh about that, because that's just how it is with this bunch.

"What if I want champagne?"

Aoyagi grins. "Did I stutter? And one of those fancy fruit platter thingies."

Shiori winds his arm into hers and plops her head on his shoulder. "See, this is why all the girls love you. You spend lots of money and you don't get drunk and obnoxious. Unlike some people at this table!"

A few words about Nobuaki Chiba because he's a fun character and I love him:

• He's about six foot even and built like a fridge and has a big square jaw and a butch cut and nonetheless gives big Just A Guy energy. Definitely intimidating if you don't know him! Kind of intimidating if you do know him! But he's Just A Guy, for the most part!
• Generally wears charcoal gray slacks and suit jacket with a purple shirt and no tie.
• Actually swore up under OG Nishitani a couple years before the old man retired but as loyal a man as Kuroshi could ever want on his team.
• Always chewing on a toothpick. He says he gnaws on toothpicks because he's trying to quit smoking. He says this with both a cigarette and the toothpick in his mouth.
• He and Sugihara gently roast each other all the time. They have been mistaken for a couple at least once because of it. Chiba is 100% straight but does not take offense to this.
• Is constantly trying to get Aoyagi laid despite having the whole ace thing explained to him. He means well but this ain't it chief
• this never changes. Aoyagi comes back to Sotenbori for OG Nishitani's funeral in 2009 and the second the service is over Chiba bodily drags him over to the Grand because it's what the old man woulda wanted
• I have not nailed his irezumi down yet but Onamazu and particularly the part where it thrashes around and causes earthquakes when unsupervised would be an amusing hint at the Chiba we see being the older, mellower version and that he was possibly even rowdier in his youth
