most people don't have the time to constantly pull the slot machine for multiple hours at a time in hopes that that 20 second slice of time has anything good in it. join them for awhile and try it

(this isn't related to current cohost stuff, i wasn't trying to be dismissive, I'm just day four of a move and checking the timeline maybe ten minutes a day and otherwise just writing)

not to be a lapsed buddhist on main or whatever but some of y'all are way too attached to the idea of reading every post. that shouldn't be an attainable goal; follow more people.

discord is right there for thinking people at all respond as fast as you do, and as a bonus you'll have more chance to be correct about that there.

not every tool needs to be exactly the same except with better picture support

this isn't prompted by anything here, but if you reply to me with something that makes it clear you aren't trying to discuss things in good faith, of course I'm going to keep asking you to read a book

Its not making things inaccessible, I was trying to do that with discussion, but if your response boils down to "that's incorrect because reasons", you don't want to talk about how those things interrelate, and you're refusing to broaden what you're talking about to the context I'm working in, context that would have been illuminated in discussion you just shut down, I'm not gonna get through anyway.

you aren't going to listen to me, but there's a chance the title sticks out in your head four months later and you find your way to more constructive or at least better informed opinions on it

all those ideas you talk about, you need to work on getting them out of your head and down on paper somewhere, ideally out there to find.

incremental progress only happens fast if people can find things that get them that much further, then write it down for the next person to get boosted, across the entire web. but that only works if it's posted somewhere, ideally somewhere people can find it easily if they're looking for it

Gwern might be a rationalist weirdo, but his ideas about Long Site are worth reading.
