Honey~
this is from a project of mine called "Kirk & Rose Co." - whimsical tales set somewhere in the XXI century in the city of Markga, capital of Cleven! the land is filled with many critters, many of whom can be found in folktales, but most people just go on about their day. they have taxes to worry about rather than dealing with magical creatures. but not for Rose, Kirk, and all the other residents of Cerrit Lane 31.
Rose Pancrew -- a recent graduate from a university in London, UK. comes from a small town somewhere in the north of England. she's majored in History & Culture, and is taking a vacation in Markga to cool her head for a month from all the studying and worrying about her future. that's where she meets her future employer (and then later her business co-owner) -- Kirk P. Mantel. Rose is bisexual, though she has always taken keen interests in women, rather than men
Kirk P. Mantel -- a freelancer, no one knows what his source of income is, but he somehow manages to scrape just enough to fuel his passions for magic and entrepreneurship. he is older than Rose, but is very short. he likes to wear coats and jackets, gets very nervous when things do not go according to plans, and physically cannot feel rain. for his entire life he's been trying to set up a business partnership with some folkloric creatures. he rents an attic on Cerrit Lane 31 where he stores all of his inventions and plans. together with Rose, they get into adventures and often fail miserably trying to establish a successful (and actually profitable) business. Kirk likes that say that he "always minds his business" and that any relationship he makes is "one purely for business. nothing personal." he is canonically aroace
Sophie Mollie -- a pale, very nervous, thin woman who lives just under Rose's flat (Rose lives on the fifth and final floor of Cerrit Lane 31). no one actually knows what exactly Sophie does for a living. the landlady once tried to spy on Sophie and stalked her on the streets to see where she was heading, but when the landlady turned around the corner, she just found a dead-end and no traces of Sophie. only a giant bat flew out of nowhere and head to the north where the graveyard is. since then, there are some rumors about Sophie. she is a lesbian and later falls in love with Rose Pancrew
Mrs. Parvus -- the landlady herself. she lives on the first floor of the building. she always tells people that she has served in "The War" but never mentions which one. she is very short, considerably old and chubby. she has darting, slightly red eyes that are told to strike fear even in the bravest of persons. she is quite dangerous and can defend herself. every lunar month, Rose sees how Mrs. Parvus takes a trash bag filled with dog's fur out of her apartment and throws it away. Rose doesn't pay it no mind. Mrs. Parvus has a rivalry with Lydia. mrs. parvus hates when she gets mistaken for a man and is ready to fight anyone who questions whether she is a "real woman". she is canonically trans
Lydia -- a mysterious, tall, confident, and imposing woman. she runs a hotel on the outskirts of the city, quote "for all of us who are unwelcome in the living society". in the past Lydia was part of a prestigious, aristocratic club that was predominant in Markga. she tells that she hates all those "street fighters" and "gang members" which really pisses Mrs. Parvus off. slowly, as more and more members of the club became older and died, the club was disbanded, with only Lydia seemingly being the same age, the same figure, and the same look as she's always been. every lunar month, Rose can sometimes hear hissing and meowing coming from the direction of Lydia's hotel.
Mr. Tens & Mr. Dens -- two brothers living on second and third floors respectively. mr. tens is very thin and tall, whereas mr. dens is very chubby and short. they both run art supply shops that are opposite of each other on the same street. mr. tens's shop is very grim, dark, tall, and dusty, whereas mr. dens's shop is very light, very cute, decorated, and welcoming. they are rivals both in business and in real life but they both love each other dearly. it is told that mr. dens had quite a few affairs with men, while mr. tens used to be very close and friendly with mrs parvus
that's the main cast of "Kirk & Rose Co." thouhg, of course, there are a lot more supporting and background characters who are golbins and magicians and giants and all of that stuff. i will be posting occasionally about my OCs and ranting about them and writing about the adventures they are getting into. i'm working on the first Adventure - The Mining Arc where Rose arrives in Markga, meets Kirk and then she teams up to steal some important documents from the local mining company which is run by Coblynau (a mining spirit said to help miners find ores, they look like small, short men) but soon finds out that it's not just Kirk's weird tendencies for inventions (and theft) but that there's a larger rivalry and war between two companies - Nook & Knock Co. (ran by Coblynau) and Blue-Industries (ran by blue-caps, another mining spirits in the shape of small men). she gets sucked into a whirlpool of folklore, adventure, and most importantly, "borrowing" important documents together with Kirk (he's promised to give her twenty pounds if she helps him)
First off, one of my favorite characters, Roc. When I made him I was exploring a lot of themes of human vs. animal nature- the world of Mutualism is populated by beasts, despite their human faces. Humans themselves are extinct, having been wiped out in war hundreds of years ago.
The Cult of Humanity, however, sees power in ancient human ways. Roc was trained from birth to model the proper human lifestyle, up until... Well, he doesn't really remember what happened, only that one day he could no longer bear standing upright, keeping his wings folded; that he woke in the Arctic with bloodstained teeth. This, however, seemed to be a blessing in disguise. For the very island he landed on seemed populated by the humans he had heard about: creatures with naturally upright postures, smooth limbs, congregated in massive colonies. Maybe if he can just talk with one, he can start answering some old questions...
