#our OCs

also, a bit of fun trivia for the folks who've known me for a while: every Fallen London OC of mine is based on an existing OC

Dr. Ashveil is pretty obvious. he's another edition of Lucent, particularly SGE!Lucent.

Lady Lemures began as an expy of Siofra, our GW2 Pact Commander.

Rafael was based on Falche, one of Lark's OCs. (Raf is 90% my OC, but Lark chips in here and there with their dialogue and thought process.)

Felix and Mateo, Rafael's adoptive sibling and older brother respectively, are based upon different aspects of Morgan. Mateo much, much moreso - Felix is basically a new OC by comparison.

And there's one more OC on the docket, a Rubbery Man and Shapeling Arts expert who is a close (and often exasperated) friend of the good doctor - he's based on Liam, sometimes called Solus. I haven't figured out his name yet.

I should make a Savoulain expy and see where he ends up. maybe I'll start by picking out a profession that isn't represented in the current crew

alternately: what if I just made him a Correspondent too

he can be the sensible and sane Correspondent who understands the importance of taking mental health breaks and safety procedures, who is still in possession of a relatively unsinged pair of eyebrows. as opposed to Dr. Ashveil

(he is probably also the Epistolant to the good doctor's Crimson Engineer; and affiliated with Summerset as opposed to Dr. Ashveil's Benthic association)

some more details: he's upper-class (as being with Summerset implies) and between that and not being visibly scorched from his studies, people tend to be more tolerant of him studying The Forbidden Maddening Sigils. he actually has a great deal of interest and respect for the good doctor's work mixed with Concern over his methods, and has written to him before like "I would be very interested in your thoughts on this, P.S. I am worried for your wellbeing, please consider getting some more safety equipment"

I'm not sure what exactly Dr. Ashveil's relationship with Benthic is these days, but he still has The Benthic in him, and he took this as a slight (due to FL!Sav being from Summerset) and responded accordingly. like "how DARE you assume I am incompetent, my eyebrows will grow back thank you very much, P.S. your theories are very interesting and here are my thoughts on them BUT DON'T GET ANY IDEAS it's not like I would like to continue corresponding with you or anything"

anyway they are still corresponding

also fuck it, more random Fallen London OC trivia:

on that first point: I know "creepy mad German doctor" is a stereotype but there is a possibility the good doctor is German... from what I could find, apparently there were a lot of medical schools in Germany in the 1800s

legitimately tempted to see if I can get my hands on this book and any related ones for research. I know I don't have to be familiar with the intricacies of medical education in the 1800s, AND YET.

Ask about the Scorched Physician

Does the good doctor mean to sound so... ominous?

GO

"'Ominous'? Well..."

The Eloquent Oneirotect laughs. "My apologies," they say. "I forget, sometimes, that most Londoners don't keep as colorful company as I do.

"In any case, Lukas certainly doesn't mean to come across that way. He's..." The Oneirotect pauses. Their fingers drum upon the table as they search for the right words. "He has a great amount on his mind, most of the time, and he forgets that most aren't as versed in the secrets of the Neath as he is. Keeps skipping ahead of everyone else, you might say. But he means well. He has always meant well, for as long as I've known him.

"If you can match his pace, or get him to slow down, I imagine you'll find him much easier to talk to. Both are easier said than done, though. For different reasons."

"Most of my patients are terribly mundane. Stabbed to death, and the like. But some..."

"Sometimes, people come to the Neath in hopes of finding a cure for their condition. Desperate, desperate people. I treated one such person. Part of her body had gone malignant, you see, and was overtaking the rest of her. Had the physicians found it sooner, before it had metastasized, she might have had a chance. As it was, the only care they could provide to her was palliative. Postponing the inevitable.

"But in the Neath? Curing such a condition is not trivial, but... options open." He leans forward. His eyes are aglow. "I could have engineered a whisper-toxin that would seek out and eliminate only the malignant parts of her, down to the individual cell. Or I could have applied the Shapeling Arts to change them back into ordinary flesh. I could, hypothetically, have changed the rest of her body to be as vigorous - though such a feat is beyond my current ability, and most, of course, would consider that approach extreme.

"In the end, I chose to coax the malignant flesh away from the places it had settled, and I gathered it under the skin of her left arm." He indicates the spot on his own, just above the crook of his elbow. "And then I made an incision, and I coaxed it away from her body entirely. Some rest and a generous application of tonics, and she made a full recovery."

He leans back. "But such miracles come with a price. Raf and I warned her. She would in all likelihood never be able to walk under the sun again. She would live - but only if she stayed in the Neath." His expression darkens. "She didn't listen. Her family wrote me. For a week, she was thriving. Happy. And then, while taking a stroll under the summer sun, she dropped dead."

His smile is as bitter and empty as the space between stars.

"Such acts of beneficence," he says, "are forbidden under celestial law."
