The Sega Saturn dominated the PS1 in Japan for their first two years on the market — until Final Fantasy VII almost single-handedly reversed Sony’s fortunes.
Now the landmark RPG’s release date is being recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association, declaring Jan. 31 officially Final Fantasy VII Day, Square-Enix announced yesterday.
And as for the Saturn, there is no Virtua Fighter Day. No Nights Into Dreams Day. No Panzer Dragoon Saga Day. Such is the ignominious fate of Sega’s 32-bit console — its many exclusives fading into obscurity as its biggest rival’s biggest game is immortalized.
GANASIA - Electrical Communication (Mega Man 8)
A wonderful song about trying to not over-rely on a high-tech society, shaping a worldview for the franchise. There’s a good game here too, with a 32-bit artstyle
(Length: 4.5+ minutes)
Ryoji Yamamoto - Ahh, A Man’s Life [original MIX] (Mega Man: Battle & Chase [1997])
Contrasting Roll’s, this one’s about Gutsman and stereotypical masculinity in a melancholy melody. Goofy as expected yet relaxing
(Length: 3+ minutes)
