My partner loves the show Remington Steele (and has a really great blog with writing on the show) so she showed me a truly insane episode that featured a bunch of people LARPing as classic literary detectives who get tied up in an actual mur-dar. (DUN DUN DUN!) One of them, brave kind Winston Zakata, has taken the persona of Mr. Moto, complete with a regrettable Hollywood Asian accent. (In a nice little bit, he abruptly drops the accent as he goes in and out of character.)
Winston is a key player in solving the case before, regrettably, he is gunned down by a woman who is wearing a Scooby Doo style rubber mask so she can look like an old lady so she can pretend to be Mrs. Marple so she has a perfect alibi. Remington Steele is a weird show, and I kinda love it.
Anyway this lead me to actually finding the Mr. Moto novels on Archive and starting through Your Turn, Mr. Moto, the first of the series. I've never really checked these out but I am an absolute sucker for detective fiction and whodunits so it seemed like a safe bet. Only got through two chapters so far but my main takeaway is:
- This is a pretty good page turner
- This is really racist
