A Protocol is a technology that gives users the possibility to interact with the Wired, being so efficient that with the last version, users can project their own version of themselves in it. On the esoteric philosophy, Protocol 7 is named after Timothy Leary's 7th layer of consciousness. This layer is a point of enlightenment where the human mind could access the memory and experience of the whole of humanity.

I'm sure non autistic trans girls relate a lot too, but when I think back on my blurry memory of watching that show... The show itself is pretty great, but it's so dark, Lain isn't supposed to be the kind of protagonist you relate to, she's a vague idea of a girl who may or may not be real and is completely detached from reality and the world around her, the only place that makes sense to her and where she thrives is in the Wired, or y'know, the internet. She lives in a dark, poorly lit room where her floor is constantly wet, the "living in a dark room staring at a computer screen day in day out" hits too close to home for me too.
