i started reading a manga/graphic novel adaptation of shadows over innsmouth because believe it or not it was the most accessible way for me to read the story via my local library and im like halfway or so. im inadvertently drawn into the meta of this story, that through the framing you're as intrigued about innsmouth as the protagonist is and despite all warnings and the uncanniness of it all, you're still drawn into this place that is alien and strange. you want to know more about the town.
