I had a thought the other day, and I haven't made time to do any research, but I'm wondering: Which do you think has been worse for local wildlife, Letting house cats go out or lawns?

There have been tons of studies that show that house cats wreck local wildlife because they're such good little hunters, but grass lawns and the infrastructure around them also have a major negative impact on local flora and fuana. Surely the best option is to just have cats inside and no lawns outside of park fields, but lawns have to be worse overall, right?
If people had rock gardens, trees, and local wildflowers then the birds, mice, etc would have better places to hide and more food so that cats wouldn't have such a negative impact?

This is probably not exactly true as I remember hearing about a lighthouse off the coast of, I think, Australia where a keeper brought a cat for company and pest control and the cat ended up hunting a local bird species to extinction. But that was a very small island and the birds didn't have a predator before that.

Look, I like when I meet a cat outside and I don't like lawns.

Too bad we called it "punk" instead of "agitpop." Missed opportunity.
