I was thinking way too literally about the phrase "a stopped clock is right twice a day" and I had a counter-intuitive realisation. a running clock (left unattended) is right only once ever. it's mostly right most of the time, but it is only exactly right once (at the moment when it runs ahead or falls behind the "true" time, if there is such a thing). This means that if all you care about is absolute correctness, you a stopped clock is "better" than a running clock.
I hate this.
