source. i mostly listen to songs on bandcamp and youtube anyway, with soundcloud and foobar2000 thrown in sometimes.

glass beach - the first glass beach album
honestly at first this album struck me the wrong way, and then after a second time approaching it I realized I didn't know what I was talking about the first time and I started listening to it literally all the time. it has comforting songs, it has upbeat songs, some rock, some electronic&intricate drums. does it all super well, awesome album
beyonce - RENAISSANCE
I first checked RENAISSANCE out when I saw people saying how it was "ripping off old house music" by sampling a bunch of it, with a side-by-side of the song with the sample source. naturally that instantly sold me on the album and I went and listened. this album is honestly a great history lesson on so much music. I listened to it, then went and looked up songs that it sampled from and went to listen to all those, great experience.
nightjars - modjeska
folky, quiet, and beautiful. this album is sad but builds up to a beautiful upbeat song at the end as payoff. it touches on themes of transness and honestly I haven't even gotten many other lyrics out of it because I haven't felt the need yet. it's the kind of album that the music and singing alone resonate with me and I will listen to the lyrics on my own time through the years.
vylet pony - CUTIEMARKS
vylet pony - can opener's notebook
vylet pony made two of my headmates ponies and got us to watch mlp. I can't give a better review than that. she's extremely versatile and makes the best pop music I know right now.
the mountain goats - songs for pierre chuvin
this came out in 2020, I don't remember if I've ever put this album down but it filled up this year nicely for me. darnielle goes back to his roots with just him and a guitar on a lofi boombox recording. he talks directly to the listener a couple times which feels intimate and improves the feeling of you listening to john play his guitar through a tin-can-and-string telephone.
mort garson - plantasia
this album meets a very specific mood I get into when I want to feel like I am a plant who is listening to a strange man play synthesizers for me
life without buildings - any other city
I posted about how the postal service made one single perfect album and called it there and a friend suggested this album as a band that did the same. I can confirm that this is a perfect album, Sue Tompkins' talking-singing is off-kilter and fits into the beat in a creative way. she switches between singing with the music and singing on her own next to the music. fucked up that she literally has made no other music after this from what I can tell.
isaac thursday - øpal jams
some gOOD drum and bass. super weird. honestly the album art is exactly how this album feels to listen to. starts off with GRAB EEEEMM which will pull you in and isaac doesn't let go of your attention until they're done with you. a rare album where I really enjoyed the usage of vocal samples (i.e. on "kinky" where it keeps chopping up the phrase "big fat. ., , , pussy, eat my eat my eat my")
downhill2k01 - DH legacy edition
very relaxing dnb. creative sounds and good samples. I wish I could describe this album more but I always sort of just let it wash over me and almost meditate to it so it's hard for me to point out specific parts. all I can say is I just keep coming back and every time I do I make sure I'm listening with headphones to get the full experience.
sonic youth - rather ripped
I guess I choose one sonic youth album every year and listen to it non-stop. this album is a lot slower and less discordant than other sonic youth projects but, it still feels like as hard of rock as others somehow. a good example of this is how "incinerate" is not a very high tempo song but it has me amped up as if it were every time. the same with "rats" and "sleeping around." the basslines drive the songs forward and Thurston Moore's singing is just so compelling every song.
