#the incredible toon machine

This is one of the more interesting games I've played recently. Another Saturn game, this is the only Ghosts n' Goblins game on the console, and one of the later games in the series, as it kinda slowly dwindled out after this point, sadly. But it's nothing like ANY other GnG game ever made. It's not a tough as nails platformer. In fact, it's kinda easy, and is made for kids lol

This game is ACTUALLY a licensed port of the game Sid & Al's Incredible Toons, a game that was released exclusively for PCs in 1993, and is a sequel of sorts to the more popular "The Incredible Machine", playing a lot in the same way but with a more cartoony atmosphere. This just takes that game, straight up, and puts a GnG skin over it, which is extremely wild. It's not like, the same mechanics and everything, it is the EXACT same game. There's even a level that still says "SID" on it, in big blocky letters.

If you've not played an Incredible Machine game, it's a Rube Goldberg simulator, essentially. You have little puzzle pieces already set up on a board, and others you can place. Each does certain things, and you need to complete a specific goal. That goal is said at the start of the level, so a translation is recommended, otherwise you won't know wtf your goal is, like I was when I first started playing. You need to learn what each piece is, and how it interacts with others, which the first 30 or so levels do a really good job at teaching you, IMO.

It eventually ramps up to some pretty complex contraptions, though some levels are a BIT much, in that they're long, and the physics engine can be unwieldly with certain objects. The bouncy ball, for example, sucks, and even though you KNOW the solution is right, something being just SLIGHTLY misaligned causes it to throw the whole thing outta wack. The physics are at least predetermined based on position, but it's not on a grid, so there's a LOT of positions you can put it in.

It's an EXTREMELY wacky GnG game, which is a series that's.... kind of a series gothic horrory deal? This replaces a cat and mouse doing cartoon antics with Astaroth and Arthur, and it's VERY weird, but honestly real enjoyable. It's VERY weird. Why are there multiple Arthurs? Who cares. Inbetween each 5 levels there's also a cute cat and mouse-ish cutscene of them torturing each other, itchy and scratchy style. There are 100 levels, and none are particularly difficult, it has a kind save feature, and the music is genuinely great, lots of jazzy covers of classic GnG tunes. I first became aware of this years ago while looking into games that are compatible with my Saturn mouse that I got for Myst (because of course I own a mouse for Myst), but it plays perfectly fine with a controller too. If you liked The Incredible Machine as a kid, this comes recommended.
