Some time I want to actually talk to a game developer and ask "Why are keyboard and mouse input mappings largely fixed and not retrieved or derived from user configuration?" Because almost all games feature at least one fixed key (often Esc, should not be fixed), but it's seemingly accepted that key binds will only sort of work for most games regardless.
