Know as "Snap Gnats" or "Poppers" in different parts of the world, Thunder Bugs are close relatives to Lightning Bugs / Fireflies. They are more often heard than seen; their bodies create cracking sounds to attract mates and ward off predators. The 'thunder' in their name is especially apt, as they appear in the late summer to early winter months after Lightning Bugs have begun their hibernation. Catching a Thunder Bug is just as safe as catching fireflies - but finding yourself in a field of them may have you wishing for earplugs.
