Don't know why but a memory of a youtube account I don't subscribe to or watch anymore popped into my head and I had a laugh at how stupid it was. You know how lots of big channels, like mighty car mods, or techmoan, or whatever often say a disclaimer like "we're just enthusiasts and not experts at this stuff, we might have done something wrong, be careful!" etc.

Yeah well this one never did. And, one time, proceeded to show off a (supposedly) ~super rare~ piece of equipment previously locked away from prying eyes for many years. After plugging it in — and not on a variac or isolation transformer or anything, just to a powerstrip — this person proceeds to take the metal cover off to figure out why it's not working, and finds a set of terminals with large-gauge (ie, not a data bus) BLUE, BROWN, AND GREEN-YELLOW WIRES. You know, the ISO/IEC/DIN/whatever colors for Line, Neutral, and Earth/Ground. Also like I said they didn't look like low voltage / ttl stuff. And the person PROCEEDS TO SHOVE A PAPER CLIP INTO THE TERMINAL BLOCK TO "JUMPER" IT. A nontrivial spark/kablooey happens.

This wasn't a livestream. It was an edited, uploaded video. And not a single mention of later on "oh well, that was definitely the line voltage, I should have been more careful STICKING CHUNKS OF METAL I'M HOLDING WITH MY BARE FINGERS INTO SOCKETS I DON'T UNDERSTAND." Nope, just "well I guess we won't be able to figure out how this thing worked!"

Like, why do you even post that video, much less highlight that you almost electrocuted yourself? I'm laughing at the superior intellect, here. I'm not saying I haven't done dumb things with electricity before — as a computer dork and a person who loves and lives in old houses it's kinda par for the course. But I don't post almost-snuff videos about it.

PS The person then went on to make videos showing how to DIY the electrical wiring for a home renovation, according to my youtube recs. I got a nice big laugh out of that. Hope you do too.

PPS I'm absolutely not ragging on somebody like electroboom either who clearly knows what he's doing but is having a bit of a laugh with all of us, just to be clear. Zero self-awareness.
