it probably has something to do with aesthetics, like so many truly awful decisions in tech. on a similar note, i've noticed fewer and fewer devices have drive activity indicators (or at least ones in an easily-viewable spot; my laptop's is next to the power jack); like, yeah, i know modern OSes access storage much more often than previous ones, which means an activity light is less meaningful than it used to be, but it was still a good indicator as to whether or not something was happening and the OS hadn't gone completely comatose

i wonder how many systems out there are suffering from misbehaving processes that are constantly eating CPU cycles and/or thrashing the hard drive, and their owners are completely unaware, aside from a vague feeling that "this system sure is slow"

Right? Not quite the same thing but I've gone years with underclocked RAM feeling it was underpowered but without any transparent indication what was going on. Would be nice for computers and apps to be more up-front about performance because it really does still matter.
