What's your opinion on video game remakes and people's attitudes towards them? I find myself weirded out when I see people say things like "I love Silent Hill 2, but it's really outdated, it could really use the remake" as if games are, at their core, ethereal concepts that are given form by technology rather than fully formed entities that already exist and cannot be replicated except by deliberately and very carefully putting in the work to make the exact same thing with minimal differences.

i don't like them, generally speaking. i like ports and preservations and i'm not a total purist, i enjoy the odd quality of life update in a modern version. but the sentiment that something needs a remake is so weird to me. if for nothing else than it's a massive waste of time and labour that could make something new.

like this new persona 3, seems basically to be the biggest waste of time atlus could possibly embark upon. they have spent more time than atlus spent developing p3 and p4 back in the day to make a new version of 3 that is too different to truly replace the original, doesn't contain all the content from all the versions, but also is not different enough to justify playing a hundred hour game twice; it has the same script, the same basic combat mechanics with a few flourishes. it's in this weird middle ground where i'm like why on earth would you do this.

as much as i would much rather square and capcom be making new games, at least FF7R and the Biohazard:RE games are brand new games wearing the skin of the old one. You are meant to play them both, and no one would ever say one version replaces another. but the demand for a remake that is simultaneously faithful (respects the original work in every possible way and doesnt try to do anything Clever) yet modern (destroys the original work and gets rid of any mechanics or design that has been deemed outdated) is a paradoxical ask that makes no sense to me.

It might be the SEGA AGES version of Phantasy Star that adds rebalanced difficulty and a minimapping function and character stats in a chrome that surrounds the gameplay window. I think that does a really good job of adding some conveniences while still letting you experience the original game. Also you can turn any of these off. It’s a really cool version of the game!
