Something like a snake, but comprised of iridescent ooze - not a slime, quite, but an exotic ferrofluid wrapped around a biomechanical core. They evolved from data storage units over an extended period, a remnant of one of the earliest civilizations that existed and collapsed. As such, they can be found in the largest numbers in the deepest points of the toxic hollows, but they've spread over time, discovered again and again and carried to new homes. Each one is a trove of information, as they still store all their experiences in their metallic semisolid flesh, and pass it drown when they split to spawn a new generation. The only extant data of entire civilizations exists in some of these creatures, and each one has a unique means of the data being accessed - one cannot simply copy them without corrupting the data and upsetting the data-serpent.
