"Indiepocalypse is a place to get published" is the phrase I've arrived at when trying to figure out how I describe the appeal of Indiepocalypse. It's not necessarily for beginners, plenty of seasoned developers have been contributors. It's not a starting point so much as it is usually just another point on an artistic journey. It's not really a way to "break in" because, as they say, buddy, they won't even let me break in.

But it is a place to get published! That means it's a place that pays you. It's a way to get (admittedly niche) attention for your game (ideally) outside your usual circles. It's a place where you as a person who may not have a budget, a following, a community/friend group, a social-media-ready hook, or any clue to do with your game, can take that game that you do have(!) and submit. At no cost and very little time!

And I think that's important to have in the medium. Now it is actually culturally important or relevant to the medium? I don't really know. I as an individual, and a deeply invested one at that, can't really decide that (it's up to The Culture) but I can hope.

At the very least Indiepocalypse is like my own weird little reverse-patreon where I get to support, discover, and occasionally hang out with an endless stream of artists I really like and that sounds good to me! (you should really check out the games too though, they're good)
